The 2020 Honda Pilot and the 2019 Toyota Highlander are both capable and well-equipped SUVs, and either could be a great choice to upgrade your Hollywood commute. But when you take a closer look, you’ll find that only the Pilot can offer V6 power throughout its lineup, along with more interior space for passengers and cargo. Find out which will best your the needs of your family in this Honda Pilot vs. Toyota Highlander comparison from Honda of Aventura.

Pilot or Highlander: Performance & Fuel-Efficiency

Miami Lakes drivers shopping for a new SUV shouldn’t have to sacrifice fuel economy for power. See how the Pilot fuel efficiency and engine power compares to the Highlander:

  • Honda Pilot: Every one of the available 2020 Honda Pilot trim levels is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. With this powerful engine, the Honda Pilot 2WD with 6-speed automatic transmission earns an EPA-estimated 19 mpg city* and 27 mpg highway.* The 2WD Pilot with the 9-speed automatic transmission has an EPA rating of 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.*
  • Toyota Highlander: The 2019 Toyota Highlander has a standard 185-hp 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 184 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, the Highlander gets a 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway rating from the EPA. If you want the power of a V6 engine, you’ll have to move up to the LE V6, which comes with a higher sticker price than the entry-level Honda Pilot LX.

Pilot or Highlander: Towing & Payload

A midsize SUV is expected to provide robust towing and payload capacities, and the Honda Pilot does just that. With a payload capacity of 1,420 to 1,625 pounds, and, when properly equipped, a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds with 2WD, the Pilot is ready to haul a travel trailer or boat out on our next family adventure. Upgrading to AWD, the Pilot towing capacity increases to a maximum of 5,000 pounds. The Toyota Highlander can provide a payload capacity of 1,486 to 1,602 pounds, and with the optional trailer hitch, the entry-level LE model can only tow a maximum of 1,500 pounds.

Pilot or Highlander: Interior Space

Both the Pilot and Highlander are three-row SUVs that offer seating for up to eight. The difference between the two is that the Honda Pilot can provide 152.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, which is eight cubic feet more than what you’ll get in the Toyota Highlander. Even in the third row of the Pilot, which can be cramped in most three-row SUVs, your passengers will enjoy 57.6 inches of shoulder room, compared to 55 inches in the Highlander.

You’ll also benefit from the generous Honda Pilot cargo capacity which provides more room for your groceries or sports gear than the Toyota Highlander:

Honda Pilot Cargo Capacity

  • Behind the third row: 16.5 cubic feet
  • Maximum cargo space: 83.9 cubic feet

Toyota Highlander Cargo Capacity

  • Behind the third row: 13.8 cubic feet
  • Maximum cargo space: 83.7 cubic feet
